Writers’ Guidelines
The following information and guidelines will inform you about submitting proposals to Paraclete Press.
About Paraclete Press
Who we are: Paraclete Press is an ecumenical publisher of books on Christian spirituality for people of all denominations and backgrounds.
We publish books that represent the wide spectrum of Christian belief and practice—Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant.
We market our books primarily through booksellers; we are what is called a “trade” publisher, which means that we like it best when readers buy our books from booksellers, our partners in successfully reaching as wide an audience as possible.
We are uniquely positioned in the marketplace without connection to a large corporation or conglomerate and with informal relationships to many branches and denominations of faith, rather than a formal relationship to any single one. We focus on publishing a diversity of thoughts and perspectives—the fruit of our diversity as a company.
The kinds of books we are looking for: We are seeking books that explore Christian spirituality and interfaith dialogue that offers themes of faith. Our children’s books are not mainstream read-alone books, but are meant to be read together with children by parents and educators to help develop children’s understanding of God and provide discussion.
We prefer to receive proposals rather than complete manuscripts.
Please use the following information to prepare a proposal.
Book Proposal contents:
- Book Summary – a one or two paragraph summary of what the book is about
- Estimated length of the completed book. Most books published by Paraclete Press are 40,000 to 80,000 words in length.
- Author Bio
- Manuscript completion date
- Potential endorsers – respected leaders in your field with whom you have connections
- Sample text should include:
- Working title of the book

- Sample chapter (or section) of the book – total text of introduction and sample should equal 15 or more pages.
- Note: proposal should be typewritten, double spaced, one sided – no e-mail submissions are accepted
- Market and marketing strategies to help our sales/PR/marketing department get a clear idea of how your book would be placed competitively in the market. Include the following in your proposal:
- Audience/Readership – Who do you see as the audience for this book?
- Promotion – What specific things would you do to help promote this book? (We view marketing and promotion of the book as a joint responsibility of publisher and author.)
- Competitive Analysis: What similar books are out there in the market? How does your book offer something new, something different? Why is your book unique within its category?
- Why are you the person to write this book?
Simultaneous submission is acceptable, though Paraclete Press must be notified that your proposal is being submitted elsewhere. Please do not send:
- Articles and short stories
